A simple q:
In w2k how can I change the default view in the open file
dialog? It's set as "List" and I want it to be "details"
sorted by date as default.

Open an Explorer (Windows+E)
Change the View to "Details" and sort it the way you want.
From the "Tools" menu, pick "Folder Options"
Click on the "View" tab
Click on "Reset All Folders"
Click on "Apply to All Folders"
Click "OK"
That's all.

That dialog is highly customizable, and varies greatly
between applications. The view behavior is going to be
different for each and every application. Word & Excel
don't share the same settings. Each application remembers
its own settings. Some apps don't remember the previous
state of the dialog (Photoshop and many others).
Unfortunately, there's no single way to do what you want
to do. You'll have to make a request of the software
developer to include such a feature.

It costs $22, but there is a pretty nice utility at
www.xdesksoftware.com called
xfilesdialog - i think the dialog boxes still open in date
modifed order, but it does open with the details view so
it's only one click to rearrange - and it opens with a
much larger dialog box, which is also helpful -

Open your explorer and configure it the way you desire
such as sort order, grid position, etc... You could also
add more grids by going to pull-down menu View | Choose
details and select any details that you want them to be
appear to the grid in the explorer. Once you are done go
to pull-down menu Tools | Folder Options and click "View"
tab. Under "Advanced settings:" clear "Display simple
folder view in Explorer's Folders list" and scroll down
and locate "Remember each folder's view settings" and make
sure the selection box is checked. Then locate "Apply to
All Folders" button and click it to apply the setting
globally. Now, as far as setting your other applications
such as Word or Excel, just modify the folder open view
the way you like it and it should retain it the way you
set it up. Hope this works for you .
It did work for me -

Try it and see - it does work - it will also set the sort
order of the dialog box at the same time it is setting the
sort order for window's explorer - however, it will not
force the dialog box to display in a detail's view - the
dialog box will display list view -
I tried the solution by Robbedoeske several times and it
wouldn't reset the common dialog box sort order - this is
the same Win9x solution posted by stevenlewis on
09/28/2001 in response to another similar question -
http://www.experts-
exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win2000/Q_20180202.html
That solution is from a MS KB article 229070, which says
that it applies to Windows 98 -
And I can attest that it wouldn't work on my Win2k
machine - [although it may work with other OS's besides
Win98]

I also meant to point out a subtle part of the solution -
Jeff mentioned it in his apology and CyberNerd mentioned
it in the last line of his solution - the MS Office apps
(and probably others) can 'over-ride' the file dialog box
default settings -
In other words, to check that the sort order of the common
dialog box has been altered, you need to run notepad,
wordpad or some realtively unsophisticated application -
I don't know if 'resetting' the sort order will 'undo' the
MS Office app file dialog box settings or not - but once
they have been reset, the MS Office apps can be set to
display the file dialog boxes differently from the
default -

And lastly (I hope), i used the term 'reset' - you can do
that from the tools|folder options|view, 'reset all
folders' - but you can also click on 'like current folder'
to set the common dialog box sort order to something else -
for example, you set up the explorer window to display
details view, click on the date modified column to use
that for setting the sort order and add in creation date
to the existing list view which might include name, size,
type and modified - then from tools|folder options|view,
click 'like current folder' - common file dialog boxes
will display in LIST view, sorted by modified date - if
you click details view, the same fields will be displayed,
ie name, size, type, modified and creation date -
As best as I can tell (without a utility like filesdialog)
there is no way to force the details view, nor enlarge the
window of the common files dialog box in Win2k -
