Hi All,

I came across this article from internet about “Common FBWF Write-Through
Directories†from
"http://blogs.msdn.com/embedded/archive/2007/03/08/common-fbwf-write-through-directories.aspx"
The article is about, what directories and/or files should be added to the
Write-Through list. Is there any documentation from Microsoft, so as to
confirm what files or directories can be made write- through in FBWF so as to
get the benefit of protecting Compact Flash from write damage over a period
of time?

Thanks & Regards
Roshan.

Roshan,

That blog entry is the most that I've seen regarding the subject.
Since each XPe image is different, it is very hard to predict what the
consequences of adding a file to the exclusion list are without a full
analysis of the image.

I always check to see if the image will continue to boot if the file
is A) Corrupted but still present, or B) Gone entirely. If it still
boots and does its intended function in those two cases, then it may
be a candidate for the FBWF exclusion list.

One area of caution with this list is the opening of the registry keys. If
the registry files get corrupted, then the system will not boot properly. It
defeats the purpose of the filter by opening a hole for the registry files.

I completely agree. I never liked the approach to fix issues related to EWF/FBWF by committing the entire registry hives. Makes it
useless to implement the write filter since users can still mess with the system and make it unstable.

I guess the Registry Filter should be use more but obviously doesn't cover all the cases and usually takes a bit more time to
investigate what particular registry keys must be made "unprotected".
