Commercial Spyware

Is there anything that will detect this sort of thing?

I'm thinking of either purchased commercial spyware/snoopware being used
inappropriately or a freebie that could have been downloaded that allows
undetected remote viewing or screen shots to be taken.

Paranoia maybe, but your advice would be appreciated.

There are several apps out there to do this. See the alt.privacy.spyware NG
as this NG is more for AV's. For starters, 2 common and FREE apps are
Ad-aware SE http://www.lavasoft.com/ and Spybot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html .

These apps are geared more for the kind of spyware that's related to adware. Some AV programs have added support for
alerting to "potentially unwanted programs" and I suggest this is more what the OP was asking about.
