Here are the comments I submitted to Microsoft on 5308:

[Firstly, dislikes]

Desktop Icons - too big for me. I would like a way to make them smaller.

File System - what is going on? I'm going to have to decipher the system!

Graphics - blinky. On log-on the desktop appears then disappears then
reappears then disappears blink blink before it finally settles down.
Overall the graphics seem inconsistent. SOmetime tranparent, sometime not,
back and forth.

Windows Mail - no option to use a | instead of a > for quoted messages.
Please bring the pipe back.

Themes - only one theme beyond 'classic'. After five years you'd think you
could pack in a couple good themes other than the default.

Security - it blocks me in my own folders! I click on the link to My
Pictures and it tells me I'm not authorized! Perhaps an easy to find
setting that enables an admin account to gain access to the whole thing
without a permission dialogue box at every move - at least temporarily. I
realize it is probably there somewhere, but I haven't found it yet! :)

Windows Explorer - If I press Alt key to get the File Edit menu and then
use an item off the menu, the menu promptly disappears. If I want to
perform another operation with it, I have to hit Alt key again. I've
pressed the Alt key - I want to see the menu - leave it there until I hit
the Alt key again please. :)

[Now what I like]

Windows Media Player - is a beaut - why isn't IE7 as cool? It could be.

Theme - The Aero theme is very nice.

New dialogue pages - The new dialogue pages are pretty good. A bit
inconsistent i.e. the old System Property sheet appears for soem things,
yet there is also a new System dialogue page. It's like you have the
legacy and new system both working.

Start Button - The new Start button is really nice for some reason I
really like the round shape.

Windows Explorer - I like that I can stack stuff in folders with many
items. I also really really like the fact that I can hit the Views button
repeatedly and cycle through the views - like Windows 98 - very nice -
thanks for bringing it back. IMHO, you must return a proper tree view
though.

Windows Key + Tab 'flip' is very good idea and makes a lot of sense for
busy people.

Computer Management - I like that you've kept Computer Management. A
central place to get a lot done.

Command line - great - used it to create partitions. Too bad Monad wasn't
ready already and included!

All-in-all a very nice operating system - although it needs work
obviously.

Right click on Desktop > View and select your choice. I personally use
Classic View

Some of those things you can change. For example right-click the desktop and
choose View to size the icons. You can also size and space icons through
Advanced Appearance options like in older Windows versions.

Files and folders are exactly as before. There's just other ways to get at
things. When you're in Explorer and the Navigation pane is open, click the
little arrow next to Folders at the bottom of the pane to see a more
traditional Folders tree.

In Folder Options (the View tab) choose "Always show Classic menus" to make
the menu bar stick.

I don't know about the other stuff. My graphics seem reasonably OK and I
haven't been locked out of my own folders.

It is a big change, and the beta's still buggy (enough to want to take a
sledge hammer to it at times). But it grows on ya. I kinda feel held back in
XP now because I can do most things more quickly and easily in Vista.

Oh yeah, I forgot. You can click that first toolbar button, Explorer Layout,
to make the Classic Menus stick too.

You can also change desktop (or Explorer) icon size by simply holding down
the CTRL key and scrolling the mouse wheel.

In Folder Options (the View tab) choose "Always show Classic menus" to make
the menu bar stick.
<<

The issue isn't Windows Explorer keeping the menu up. The issue is Microsoft
betraying the menuing keystroke paradigm for two decades of Windows users,
where users to this point could actually release the Alt key before choosing
the menu from another keystroke. Application developers WILL follow the
example of out-of-box Windows. I can see Accessibility issues (i.e. problems
w/ disabled folks) having a real hard time with having to use two hands or
having to stretch the fingers across from holding the Alt key down. Frankly
being in good health I'm perturbed that this suggests that I can't use a
pencil while I'm on the phone to tap 'Alt' and a menu item in seperate
keystrokes.

Oh, I see. Oddly only Explorer's menu seems to have that problem. All the
rest of my menus do work the old way. Maybe it's just an Explorer bug, don't
know. But you're right, there's no good reason for Explorer's menu bar to
work differently from the rest. Certainly worth submitting as a bug.
