Hi,
Looking to use the AVG7 freeware version to replace Norton AV and
wondering how good is this? Is it up to the task?
Anyone has bad experience?
Thanks.
Roger
Well, unlike the others that replied this is one AVG user that was not happy
and changed after v7 came out. I had used AVG 6 for many years and was very
happy, but the problems with AVG 7 on first release made me look elsewhere.
I finally compared AVG 7 with others like Avast Home and was horrified at
how many things AVG was letting through that Avast and others stopped! My
daughters computer after a re-format and running AVG 7 for a couple of weeks
was running slow and having problems, a full scan with AVG showed one
infection that AVG did nothing about, but otherwise all clear. A scan with
Avast however showed FOUR different virus infections, all of which were
dealt with quickly by Avast (unlike AVG) and the system returned to normal
operation.
I know of many others that have changed after comparing AVG with other AV
software and finding that AVG just isn't up to the task as much as many
people like to think. Now I run NOD32 but if you want a free AV then I
recommend Avast Home is far superior to AVG 7 in detection and resource use,
especially on slower machines. One of the PC's I tried the various software
on was a P1 200MHz running Win98SE and then a PIII 1GHz running WinXP Pro,
and on both of these Avast ran far better and less resources than AVG 7.
Just my comments from a previous AVG fan and long term user that eventually
saw the light! Obviously not everyone has the same experiences though..
