comments on arbitrary files and directories?

Files on WinXP can have comments (Properties => Summay tab) which can be
displayed e.g. details view. Can one enable such comments also for
directories?

I would like to label certain directories with the version of the SW
they contain.

Also - some file types - e.g. .lnk (link) files, don't allow comments
either. How about these?

AFAIK, no, you can not. The channel used for that information doesn't exist
for folders. It seems like it would be logical though, I agree.

Best there would be to simply rename the folders and add the SW revs in the
folder name.
Also - some file types - e.g. .lnk (link) files, don't allow comments
either. How about these?

PS in fact, those "comments" etc. of the summary tab also will not copy to
CDs or any formated device which is not NTFS.

Not so good, since I have a somewhat elaborate build environment and -
to keep misc. scripts working - whenever I get an updated version of
some library I rename the old version (to be able to go back in case the
new one has problems) and store the new version under the generic name
(i.e. no version in the name). But sometimes this causes problems in
later figuring out, what version the current "generic" file actually
has. Putting such info into the comments might occasionally help. My
current work-around for folders is to always create an empty file with
the version number as name. Putting it in the name might spare me that
exercise (and even allow to automatize that renaming of an old version
using a script).
