At someone's prompting, I have created a new thread with this question.
I have written a review of the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack at:

http://georgeh123.blogspot.com/2005/08/video-player-with-codecs-and-tools-k.html

Someone left the following comment on my site and I was wondering if
everyone on this forum agrees:

i really don't think you should recommend Klite or any other megacodec
packs.

klite works by what i like to call the brute force method... it's just
a pack that installs every available codec.

i think installing CCCP as recommended by someone above me, is a better
idea.

Just compare the sizes: KLite: 33 mb setup, CCCP: 5 mb download.
(CCCP doesn't include Real Alt or QT Alt, but youcan get that on your
own).

CCCP is leaner, meaner, and most importantly, it has so far played back
EVERY single file that i've downloaded. EVERY. not a single one has
failed.

please try CCCP. i know you won't regret it.

Personally, I have been using K-Lite Mega Codec Pack for a few years now
and have been very happy with it. My only real gripe is that it doesn't
uninstall very cleanly, but I deal with that by installing and
uninstalling each consecutive version with Total Uninstall. And the size
of a 33MB setup file may be a real issue for someone with a 2GB
harddrive, but . . .

Hi George,

I pretty much agree with the commenter. It's been said about software
"If you don't know what it is, you don't need it". I installed k-lite
way back, but it's been made pretty much obsoleted by FFDShow. Presently
I still have k-lite installed, but after I upgraded FFDShow to SSE3
enabled build, it overtook my rendering path almost completely. There
haven't been any noticeable downsides with that.

From this you might draw a conclusion, that all you really need is:
I
1) FFDShow for your basic media
2) AC3Filter and optionally Matrix Mixer for DD5.1/AC3 soundtracks
3) DVD Codecs, for example your bundled PowerDVD/WinDVD or NVidias own
if you'd happen to have GF6 series PureVideo enabled display adapter.
4) Some media front-end, be it Media Player Classic, ZoomPlayer or
something else

II
Or alternatively you could just install VideoLAN Client
<http://www.videolan.org/vlc/> , which can do all the ordinary tasks,
and then some.

Behind this minimalistic logic is the basic principles of windows
software: the more you have installed, the more probable it is to
something go haywire. And your average user don't need all the
overlapping ware, say Divx 3.11 Alpha Slow Motion codecs or 3ivx
encoders, which for example come with k-lite.

After you install k-lite and take your basic .avi with mpeg4/mp3 content
and open it with GSpot, it tells you have about ten different codecs
able to decode the content, yet you can you only use (need) one set at a
time.

Cheers

My test install discovered over 2,000 reg entries with K-lite. It
sure isn't 'Lite' in that respect. Uninstalled. WMP9 came with
everything I need, but use Koolplaya and MPClassic for most uses.
