Command Prompt keeps popping up

I am currently running Windows 2000. After a normal
reboot, my MS-DOS prompt keeps popping up and closing
every few seconds. At first, it was directed from
C:\WINDOWS\system32\command.com . I then copied the
command.com file and renamed it and deleted the one from
the system32 directory. The command prompt kept popping
up, though, but was directed from .\cmd.exe . I don't know
how to fix this and any help would be much appreciated.

As I was reading throughout the newsgroup, I thought I
would mention that I have SP 4 and ran sfc /purgecache and
sfc /scannow, with no success. I ran anti-virus without
any success either. I am also getting a failed to
initialize 0xc0000142 error when I try to either shut down
or reboot.
 
it is a virus.
update your virus definitions.
i cannot remember but go to symantec or mcafee and lookup
gator.
or run spybot
