I had to do a reinstall of windows on one of my computers using windows 98.

Now I can get on the net with outlook express, FTP but not with IE. I
believe that the problem with a file named comctl32.dll, which I had to
extract in order to get my system back up.

Is there any I can get this file updated without Internet Explorer running?

It should be in one of your CAB files from the previous install or in your
Shared Files folder.

First up do a Search of your computer for the file.

If you don't find it then...

You could try the IE Repair utility which will check the files and versions
of the necessary files and unpack them or download them for you.
In the Add-Remove Programs control panel, find the "Microsoft Internet
Explorer" item and press the "Add-Remove" button. Select the Repair option.

I had already restored it from a CAB file. However I get the message that
the version number is too low.

I have the correct version number on another computer. However that computer
is running Windows XP, whereas the computer with the problem is running
Windows 98.

Would it be OK to just copy the version from one computer to the other.

Search your computer and see if you have many copies of different version.

Compare your version(s) against this database.
Which one should you have?
