when i make a 2 column box and try to make a selection just the first column show up

If you want both columns to show up, make sure your combo
box format propery called <columns Heads> is set to 2.
Then make sure under <column widths> there are 2 entries
separated by a semicolon. Then make sure the <list width>
is at least the size of both column measurements added
together. This should set you straight.
