Combining child domains

Hi All,
My company has one parent domain and 2 child domains. We're a small
company and there is no need for the seperate domains. I'd like to get us to
one domain. I know I'll need to move the user accounts to the parent domain,
then disjoin the systems from their child domain and join them to the main
parent domain. Once I do that should I then be able to run DCPromo on the
"old" Domain controllers and then join them to the parent domain which will
be the only one by that time? Will that remove the child domains from the
scheme? Any white papers that could be recommended also would be great! Any
gotchas that I need to be aware of?
Thanks so much for the advice!

Thanks for the information and link! I tried to run the test migration and
realized that my source domain needs to be in native mode. I don't have any
NT4.0 servers in my domain but I do have another domain (which isn't going to
be migrated becasue the functions the servers are resposible for are getting
moved and these servers will be retired at some point) that is NT4.0. My
question is that if I change my mode from mixed to native on my source
domain, will that change cause any problems in continuing to communicate and
have a trust with the NT4.0 domain?

Thanks!
