I have an HP DL580 with 2 18GB drives, mirrored and partitioned into C: and
D:. D: is not being used and C: is out of space.

Is it possible to remove the D: and add it to the C:?

I assume I can, just not sure how to extend the C: once D: is gone.
Possibly in the Arrary Configuration Utility.

Thanks

You need a partition manager utility, such as Partition Magic, or Server
Magic (If a Server OS)

Delete the 2nd partition D.
Increase the size of C to fill the now unused space.
Job done. Should take 5 mins, as all that is required is to amend the
partition tables.

Chris

No, you shouldn't use ACU, the array is already 18GB.

You might be able to extend the system/boot partition if it still is on a
basic disk.

You will need free contiguous space after C: in order to extend it. In
other words, you would need to delete the partition after C:, if you have
any.

Use diskpart.exe from "safe mode with command prompt" to extend
the partition.

This is normally not recommended on the system partition, but usually works
anyway. Also see this MS Knowledge Base article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=325590

Ensure that SP4 is installed before you do this:

Another option is to perform an upgrade installation, as this article
describes:

Volume Manager from Powerquest, or other third party utilities, might also
be an option.

Hi Paul,

Thanks forthe info. I've been doing some digging and found that
diskpart.exe might do the trick.

Thing is I've found conflicting information. 2 articles, 1 says that it
works with Basic disks and 1 that says it doesn't.

Have you used it before?

Chris

What article (MSKB?) says that diskpart.exe doesn't work with basic disks?

Bjorn,

Thanks a bunch!!

Here's a bit of a snag. What if the pagefile is running on the partition
I'm going to be removing? Should I move it to C: before removing the D:
partition?

Chris

Chris

Yes, you need to move your page file to C: before you delete D:. You cannot
delete a partition that contains the page file.

Also, before proceeding, perform a backup. The procedure, using
diskpart.exe to extend the system or boot partition, is not supported by
MS, and is not fail safe.

Hence I recommended a real partition tool. I have had bad experiences with
Disk Part, on a HARDWARE Adaptec mirror. We lost the system disk completely.
Luckily we had a backup with Ghost to recover from.

Yes, a backup of some sort is essential.

Unfortunately, i've seen people loosing servers using third party tools
also.
