I am trying to find a tutorial to help me understand the
concept of Combination Charts. I don't know where to go
to get a thorough explanation. Does anyone have any
online resources that are free? Thanks in advance.

Try my website, particularly this page and the links from it:

A combination chart is simply a chart with multiple series that displays
the series using more than a single chart type. For example, you might
have a chart that shows one series of data using lines and another with
columns. There is a very small set of built-in combination chart types,
but it's easy to create your own. Make a chart in which all the series
are of one type (say, Line chart), then select one series, and choose
Chart Type from the Chart menu, and select a different type (say,
Column) for the selected series.

Thank you! I think I need to really understand what a series is. It is probably common sense but I just don't understand it.

A series is simply a set of data that goes together. In a simple line
chart, a series is the set of points connected to a line. In a simple
column chart it's the columns with the same formatting (it's possible to
format each column within a series differently, which is why I refer to
a "simple" column chart). If I plotted this data:

Mike Joe
1999 1500 1800
2000 1600 1925
2001 1695 2035
2002 1780 2150
2003 1910 2265

I would have two series, one for Mike and one for Joe, plotting whatever
the values represent over time.
