COM1 Serial Port

Trying to connect Garmin GPS with Toshiba Tecra 9000
running WindowsXP. Get the following message:

There is a problem with the COM1 serial port. Access is
denied.

Any help on how I might resolve this will be greatly
appreciated.

Likely:
Check the BIOS by accessing at BOOT (Instructions on Screen =Press the
[Pause] key to read! (or in Manual).
Look for Communication PORTS, serial, port #1
on the second or third page
Enabled, Disabled?
Change if...
Accept, Save. Exit, Reboot.

Windows sometimes thinks that GPS data is a microsoft ballpoint mouse.
If so, it will capture that port, and install the mouse driver.
 
Mikey...please give a little more information....I'm not sure how to "Check
the BIOS by access at BOOT." Also, not clear on what you mean
by "Look for Communication PORTS, serial, port #1 on the second or third
page Enabled, Disabled? Change if...Accept, Save. Exit, Reboot.
