Com1 port problem.

I am having problems sending data to a printer using the Com1 port.
Com1 is displayed in device manager and appears to be working fine but
for some reason the printer is not receiving any data.

Scenario:-
We have a Zebra Z4Mplus printer plugged in the serial port on the back
of the machine.
We use a program that monitors a folder on the machine. When a file
with the .LAB extension is put in the folder the application sends the
data contained in the LAB file directly to the Com1 port.

I have tried plugging the printer into the printer port and using the
"Copy test.lab lpt1" command in dos prompt which works fine but it
just will not do anything when plugged into the serial port. I have
tried the command using com1, "Copy test.lab com1".

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advanced.

Tom.

Are you sure that the serial port you are plugged into is COM1 could it
be COM3 or something else?

I only have Com1 displayed in Device Manager and I only have one
serial port on the back of the base unit. Is it still possible I
could be using a different com port?

No, I doubt it. Does the printer require a different driver to be
installed when using a COM port instead of an LPT port? Maybe that is
the cause.

It doesn't. We print to the printer by sending data directly to the
port which is understood by the printer so drivers are not needed.

Tom, it might be worth checking to see whether the printer really does
think it is on Com1. Control Panel > Printers and Faxes, right-click
Properties, then choose Ports tab.

The printer does not show up in Printers & Faxes because if it is
installed in this way when we try send directly to Com1 using command
line we receive an error because the port is already in use.

Hmm, I'm a bit confused by that :-)

What happens if you try sending to AUX instead of COM1?

The same happens, says file copied but nothing prints out of the
printer.

I plugged the printer into the back of the computer using a parralel
cable, I then used the command

copy c:\test.txt lpt1 - this worked fine.

The thing is i need to use com1 port because we use an asp.net
application which prints to the printer in a similar way and has been
hard coded to use com1. Thing is at the minute nothing works via com1
