I want to connect an external modem to my laptop PC using
com1 port.
Windows 2000 control panel, setting, property, says the
port is working correctly.
Nevertheless, if I try to use Hyperterminal or any other
mean of communication to test the port (including
DOS "mode" command) I have the message "The port is in use
by another program. Wait for the port to be free and try
again"
Is there any mean to detect if and which program is using
the port and then how to stop it?
Thank you for any help

Go into Device Manager and see if any other device is using
either IRQ4 or I/O address 03F8h (assuming your COM port
is configured as COM1), or IRQ3 or I/O address 02F8h (if
the COM port is COM2).
