Com Port Setting Discrepancy?

Under Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Ports: COM2 was set
at 9600 bits per second.

Under Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Modems: the modem
port is set to COM2, and the maximum port speed is set at 115,200.

Would this difference cause slow internet site loading?

Sorry if this is a "doh" question. My new computer set up has been painfully
slower than my old one (with only 128 Mbyte RAM), despite the new one having
four times the RAM (512 Mbyte RAM), for one thing. I just happened on this
"port setting" discrepancy and so increased the first setting above to
115,200. I think things are now faster when I'm online, but I am not sure if
I nailed the problem.

The slowness was particularly noticeable when building my web site using
Earthlink's site builder.

TIA for your community service.

In one of your other posts, you state you are using a USB
modem. The question is, whether that connection method
would be affected by a COM port setting.

You also stated that you downloaded a Java installer from java.com.
The installer is 16MB according to that site, and you say it took
45 minutes to download. 16*1024/(45*60) = 6KB/sec. Which is 48Kbits/sec
or roughly what I would expect of a 53Kbit max dialup connection.
(I think I used to get 46Kbits/sec or so.)

Data compression is one method, over and above the raw
download rate, that affects performance. If, somehow, data
compression was disabled in the AT commands used during dialup,
perhaps that would reduce your surfing performance. For your Java
download, the installer is probably already well compressed, and
no further compression would be possible. (There are even times,
where a compression method on a modem, can reduce efficiency. It's
been a while since I've used dialup, so I forget all the rules.)

http://www.v92.com/about/v44compression.html

Perhaps you could get a copy of http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
It has an option to do a "text dump", and in that text file
will be a listing of details about your system. If you post
portions of the contents of that file, maybe someone could
identify whether your system is set up well or not. Snipping
out the irrelevant parts may help the posting fit within the
text limits of a posting (whatever that limit is).

You'd have to laugh at this:

Zoom V.92 USB Mini 3090
http://www.buyersedge.com/Product/prodDesc.asp?XOS=2993933&PageView=2

"Configuration is automatic and without the potential conflicts
of an RS-232 serial port or an internal modem."

So there you have it :-) It is "automatic". And the AT command
sequence is probably already set optimally (if you can find the
AT command string, the Zoom site may have documents to help you
decode the options being used).

You are a careful, hard-working, focused researcher. Wow...

Here's the text dump file. Anyone? I would be much obliged for insight.

You are a careful, hard-working, focused researcher. Wow...

Here's the text dump file. Anyone? I would be much obliged for insight.

So, it is a Celeron D 2.13GHz/FSB533/256KB cache processor.
One stick of PC3200 512MB memory (running at DDR333 ?)
Single channel memory chipset (P4M800CE) from VIA.
Built-in graphics.

I was hoping it would dump some info about the modem, but
I guess not. Is your modem listed on this page, or is it
some other model ?

http://www.zoom.com/techsupport/dial_up/3090.shtml

It seems strange for a USB modem to still have concepts
that go back to COM posts. On the one hand, the USB
modem probably needs a "virtual" COM port, for legacy
compatibility with older programs that do dialup
(or even Hyperterminal). But some of the concepts
just wouldn't seem to translate well - like the
transfer rate between computer and modem. The modem
will still have a "connect" rate, such as listing
"connect at 46K" or the like. That is between your
modem and the ISP. But between the modem and the
computer, the transfer is via USB, and a connect rate
there doesn't make any sense (like 115K).

What connect rate is claimed, when you dialup to your
provider ? For me, "46K" was a good day.

I've never used a USB modem, but I have messed around
with the INIT string on a few ext modems in the past (back
in the days when you got your best performance via
custom settings). With WinXP, I don't know if there is
sufficient transparency, to see the entire INIT string
being used or not. The bottom of this page, mentions
how to find your INIT string.

http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/modem/4.shtml

You don't have to change anything there, but just have
a look around, to see what is being used, and compare
it to the docs for the modem.

I used to have some problems with the two modem standards.
There was K56flex and X2. When V.90 and V.92 showed up,
the idea was, the differences between K56flex and X2
hardware would be hidden. But with V.90 at least (I
never got to try V.92), I did notice that I had better
stability, using a K56 chipset modem with a K56 modem
pool. Or an X2 chipset modem with an X2 modem pool. I
still have two modems on my desk, one of each type,
as I used to dial up to two different pools (one for
work, one for home use).

In the case of your modem, I believe all of this is just
software, and that is the reason the Zoom modem mentions
a "500MHz" processor as a minimum. That suggests the
modem simply takes voltage samples from the phone line,
and your processor does DSP (digital signal processing),
to recover the data. The last time I benchmarked two
modems (an external USR Courier versus a Winmodem), the
Winmodem was actually 1% faster in download performance.
The USR used to be the king, for performance, and it seems
the software method finally caught up. Of course, that
means you still have to get lucky, and buy a modem where
the driver writers figured all this stuff out :-)

So, it is a Celeron D 2.13GHz/FSB533/256KB cache processor.
One stick of PC3200 512MB memory (running at DDR333 ?)
Single channel memory chipset (P4M800CE) from VIA.
Built-in graphics.

Most of this is consistent with what I know of my CPU and memory, yes.
I was hoping it would dump some info about the modem, but
I guess not.

No, nothing on the modem, even when I run the CPU-Z software with the
interface output option.
Is your modem listed on this page, or is it
some other model ?

http://www.zoom.com/techsupport/dial_up/3090.shtml

It's the model 3090 listed on the page above. (The model # is written on my
modem. I saved all the documentation for it, too. Plenty of chatter in the
little manual about messing with the ports if there are problems getting it
going.)
It seems strange for a USB modem to still have concepts
that go back to COM posts. On the one hand, the USB
modem probably needs a "virtual" COM port, for legacy
compatibility with older programs that do dialup
(or even Hyperterminal). But some of the concepts
just wouldn't seem to translate well - like the
transfer rate between computer and modem. The modem
will still have a "connect" rate, such as listing
"connect at 46K" or the like. That is between your
modem and the ISP. But between the modem and the
computer, the transfer is via USB, and a connect rate
there doesn't make any sense (like 115K).

That's a max rate, according to my settings.
What connect rate is claimed, when you dialup to your
provider ? For me, "46K" was a good day.

Right now, right-clicking on my ISP's connection icon, then clicking on
"status," displayed is a "connection speed" of 115.200 kbps. Under
"Activity" it says that "Sent" compression is 11%; "Received" is 4%. (Dunno
what that means, but someone asked about compression before.)

(The above is for my new computer, with new mobo/cpu. I'll probably
experiment with my old computer in the next day or so, to see if anything
leaps out at me by way of differences.)

You don't have to change anything there, but just have
a look around, to see what is being used, and compare
it to the docs for the modem.

I see at the Zoom modem site you give above that, for one thing, my new
computer is not using a modem driver for Win XP. It's using the driver for
Win ME and other Win versions c. 2001, which of course came with the modem
back when I bought it in 2001. I'll try to download and install the Win XP
driver, first thing.

I can get a grasp on some of what you're saying but of course will have to
study most of the terms above more. You've given me some good ideas. Right
now I'm thinking 'Eureka, it's probably my old but reliable modem!' Not that
I'm going to go out and buy another. (Not when the old one is plenty fast on
my old computer.) But it is time to do some more homework. Thank you!
