COM port missing

In XP my modem is not being detected by the computer, 8
out of 10 times. I followed the modem trouble shooter
which says to make sure the com port is enabled. However,
under "device manager" there are NO communications ports
listed (no com1, com3, or anything else except LPT 1) when
I open the "Ports (COM & LPT)" option.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the modem, and it says
the modem is working properly.

Thanks for whatever help is provided.

Was it working correctly, and then suddenly it started this, or did it
always do this? Have you looked in bios. Make sure that com 2 is enabled
and that there are no conflicts in IRQ land.

Hope this helps

Generally, the com port that the modem is on doesn't appear under the Ports
as those are the physical com ports on your computer.

Unless, of course, you're using an external modem which is attached to one
of those com ports.

Hello, and thanks for the help....

Yes, it has been working for 16 months and just started
doing it. It is very randum about when it can find the
modem and when it can't.

You suggested looking in the bios. I have no idea what
that is (although I've heard of it before). You also said
to make sure the com 2 port is enabled. The modem thinks
it is on Com3 and I can not find any Com ports listed in
the "Ports (COM & LPT)" option of "device manager".

You also said something about confilicts in IRQ land. I
know there are conflicts these days in IRAQ, but what or
where is "IRQ land".

Thanks for whatever help you can provide me. I work
extensively on computer using word processors, database
programs, email programs and internet browsers: but I
don't know alot about the computer workings behind those
applications.
