Columns numbered and not alphabetic

Some of my spreadsheets have had the columns numbered in place of alpha. Is
this due to them being created in an older version of Excel and now being
updated into Excel 2003. The numbered columns show formula that is not
standard. eg =Sum(F4:F27) has some unknown formula but the answer is still
correct.

Suggest to check Tools/Options, look at General tab, and in top left see
whether R1C1 reference style has been checked.

If that does not work, please write back just what it is that you are seeing
as the formulas. Also, indicate the old file type if you know it. That kind
of example would help, because it could be a range of settings --- even
esoteric such as special column labels or defined names.

I am having the same problem and my Tools/Options general tab withthe R1C1
reference has been checked. The formulas are still correct but they are
refenceing things like =SUM(RC[-8]:RC[-1]).... what the heck is this. I am
just adding across a row or column
