Dear all

I have finally found ahelpful forum, i hope! I am buying a digital video
camera from the states next week which will be in NTSC format (i live in the
UK, PAL format video). My question is this:

Am i right in thinking that if i transfer video footage from my camera to
Windows Movie Maker (obviously using the NTSC input format), can i then
record this video onto a DVD or VCD in PAL format which will then play on PAL
DVD players? I have Nero DVD burning software, i assume this makes no
difference?

Also, one final question, what is the difference for my use between mepg1
and mpeg2?

As far as simple NTSC to PAL conversion is concerned it will be OK as
per the stated method. However such conversion involves subtle color
space issues which may not work.

You need to use MPEG2 for burning a playable DVD Video. MPEG1 is only
for VCD which is a lower grade video on a cd.
 
My personal opinion is don't do it. Why are you buying NTSC cam anyway? If
you want to take advantage of the price savings from the US, still buy a PAL
cam. Don't forget if buying from the US, you will have to pay VAT and import
duties on arrival of the cam to the carrier who delivers it, which will up
the cost. If you are visiting the states you may get through customs by not
declaring it, biut I'd still strongly recommend a PAL cam.
