I am working on a bar chart that lists the # of schools on the x axis and
total sales on the y axis. Since there are numerous schools, I noticed the
colors of the bars are repeating themselves. I would like to make is so the
first group is solid, the second one pattern and the third another.

I hope I didn't confuse you too much......

thanks

Why is every bar a different color? Could you not simply have the bars
all be the same color?

Each column represents a different school.

Yes, but why do you not simply name each school on the x axis, instead
of using a large number of colors? I think I understand the effect
you're after, but I have my doubts that the readers of the chart will be
able to keep more than a very small number of colors straight. It may be
better to just use words.

Tools / Options / Color

In a default palette, all eight colours in the bottom row are duplicates of
some in the top five rows, as are two in the 2nd bottom row. Click Modify to
customize any duplicates you want to change.

In a default chart with default palette, the first duplicate will not appear
until the 18th series, the next at the 38th, so you must be dealing with
quite a few schools.
