When I modify a color scheme and check to add it to my design temp it
does,
but then when I come back to PPT it is gone. How can I make it stay in my
color schemes?

Which version of PowerPoint?
- In PowerPoint 2007: Don't forget to assign a name to the new color scheme,
do not use the default name.
- In older versions: Delete some of the color schemes you do not need, the
number of color schemes is limited to 16.

Best regards,
Ute

Sorry, I am on 2003. I only had 7 or 8 color schemes so it is not an issue of
a limit of 16. ANy other ideas?

Make sure you click the "Add as standard scheme" option in the Color Schemes
dialog box before you apply it.

You did that, and still the color scheme is no longer in the PPT when you
open it again?

I go to the design temp, choose color schemes, edit color schemes, make a
change, click add as standard color scheme and then click apply. the color
scheme then appears in the task pane. When I close the file and then reopen
a new file I look in design templates, color schemes, and the one I just
created was not there.

Am I doing something wrong?

You've changed the color scheme for the presentation, but not for the
template a new presentation is based on. To do that, you'll need to add the
color scheme then save the template as a new default template. Follow the
instrux here:

Create a default "blank" presentation with your own defaults
