Are there color laser printers under $10,000 yet that can produce a nice
color brochure any where close to the higher end presses. What products
come closest to this quality with current technology? Any recommended web
sites for reading would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know if you can get a good answer to that question on this newsgroup
as we are mostly oriented to consumer grade printers. You might try
comp.publish.prepress. That's an industry oriented group with the experience
level that should be able to give you a better answer.

How much do Canon's lowest CLC range come in at? Or you could get a
second hand one, as I type, for another 18hours there is a three year
old CLC1180 on ebay.com for $6,000. These are not small machines, my
950 weighs in at quarter of a ton. They produce a very good quality, and
are used by professional printers. The same company seems to have some
of the larger models available as well, weighing half a ton!

What technology am I looking for to achieve a near pre-press quality. You
mention "paper surface"? Is that the technology or type of printers to look
for?

Thanks.

You are probably looking for a two-stage process with developer and
toner, so that the intensity of each dot can be varied.

The current Canon CLC range are above the price range you are looking
at, but I think it would be worth looking at the second hand ones, if
you find your local Canon dealer they may have some second user
ones/refurbs that they could provide on a maintenance contract.
Alternatively you could consider renting/hire-purchase.

In addition there are the Xerox Docucolor machines, which might probably
dip below $10,000. It also worth looking at the Ricoh (also badged as
Infotec/Nashuatec/Gestetner) machines, preferably those based on their
colour copier technologies rather than on their printer technologies
(AIUI their printers only have 4-bit colour depth whereas I think the
(more expensive) copier based ones work on an 8-bit color depth.

The paper surface should have characteristics about positive polarit
charge to improve toner transfer completely from OPC drum to paper
Base on this condition, entry-level laser printer with 600dpi engine
2400dpi print output quality, PCL6 and PostScript Level 3 printin
language is enough such as HP CLJ 2550L

It really depends upon what you consider "higher end press quality".

You can get close to clay coated 4 color magazine quality from many
color laser and solid ink printers now.
