Color Folders PC vs Apple

Recently, I was trying to color code the folders
typically found on the desktop in the Windows XP
program. I want to be able to choose the color of a
folder no matter what part of a directory or sub-
directory the folder(s) appear in. I cannot find a
command in any Microsoft program or software to perform
this task.

I've walked into various Apple centers here in New
York and explained my needs. With a few button clicks and
in less than 30 seconds, the Apple represenitatives,
using their platform, were able to create a folder in any
selected color. I have asked the same question
concerning color coding folders of PC owners and the
answer is always the same, "Can't be done with a PC."

If anyone out there knows how to change the color of
folders on the desktop and throughout the programs and
would be patient enought to explain, in step-by-step
fashion, I would greatly appreciate it. It dones't seem
right to me that the Apple-heads can do things wtih their
computes that we Pcers can't.

Can't be done with a PC. Heh, sorry I couldn't resist
it! Seriously though, it's a limitation of the Windows
GUI at the moment - Micro$oft simply hasn't provided
any 'official' methods to perform such customisations.

Maybe there is a 3rd-party utility out there that will let
you do this, but I haven't been able to find any. Let's
face it the Windows technology was pretty much stolen from
Apple in the first place, so it's hardly surprising the
Mac has so many features we'll never get to see on PC.

Micro$oft just doesn't have the imagination beyond
inconveniencing and annoying it's users...

You may customize a folder and change either the Icon for it or even place a
picture on it (in thumbnail view) to help you find or organise your folders.
Just look at the properties of a folder and go to the customize tab.

You CAN do what you want in Windows, but since Windows doesn't natively
understand coloring you have to go the stupid way. Windows WILL let you
change the icon for any file or folder. Create one folder icon and
'paint' it different colors and save them as different icons (like
red_folder.ico, blue_folder.ico, etc). Then when you create a folder,
right click and choose properties, then click on the button to change
the icon, and choose the colored icon you made earlier.

There are several freeware icon makers out there. I use a commercial
tool called Microangelo. It's wonderful! You might also be able to use
MS Paint and change the extension to .ico (and icon used to be nothing
but a windows bitmap with certain restrictions).
