Anyone having some problems with color fidelity/consistency of latest
versions of Vuescan? I need some advice/help.
The color controls of the version I had been using (8.2.13) were set to
produce good color in virtually any slides I scanned on my Nikon
Coolscan 4000. I just upgraded to 8.3.26 and then immediately to .27
before starting a large scan job (1000+ slides), but have run into
serious problems getting the colors correct. I never had this problem
with previous upgrades; I simply used the same parameters each time.
The two latest versions of Vuescan do not seem to be interpreting the
scanned colors correctly (or was the last version not doing so?), or at
least consistently compared to 8.2.13 .
I have a standard slide of a Macbeth Color Checker Chart surrounded by
a dark grey background which I scanned with my 8.2.13 version and with
the latest 8.3.27 version. Then by adjusting the color settings in the
8.3.27 version I was able to get the grey background color identical on
both scans visually on the monitor and using the color picker in CS2.
Then I sample checked 11 of the other color blocks on each of the two
scans. Out of the 11, 6 were close enough to be considered identical.
However on 5 of the block comparisons the blocks from the 8.3.27 chart
were 8 to 10 units of red lower than the comparable block from the
8.2.13 scan. This is a readily noticeable difference and implies a
real inconsistency between how the earlier and latest version are
interpreting colors.
In general the discrepancies were encountered on the lighter colored
blocks rather than the dark colored blocks.
Any one have any ideas what I might be doing incorrectly, or am I right
that the problem might lie in the software. Right now I have 2
choices. First, simply continue using my old version; or, secondly,
nudge the red brightness control about 4 units so that most colors
would be no more than 4 +/- units of red off. I would prefer to find
out I have mis set something in my new Vuescan version that is causing
this.
