Color confetti and broken sound on video downloads

I'm seeing what I might call confetti (small red and green rectangles) on my
downloaded video files, along with static that makes the audio
unintelligible. I'm using a firewire PCMIA card and cable, on a
three-year-old HP notebook running Windows XP. Movie Maker 2.1 is the
software. Any idea what's wrong?

try capturing with the WinDV utility which uses a larger data buffer....
there's a link on my Setup > Other Software page.

The hard drive is critical... free up space and defrag.
