Using XP-Media Edition and Movie Maker 5.1 service pack 2.

When I open a project to continue working on it, I don't always have the
corresponding collection open up. There doesn't seem to be any correlation
between the collection that opens up and the project that opens up. Is it
just me, or is there something I am missing?

Collections and projects are not related....

Collections are a single database file... a library of things you put in it
for use in movie projects.... and don't need to be used at all if you don't
want.

Projects are specific to a movie you're making.... once the items have been
selected from the library of collections and moved to it.... you can delete
the collections without effecting the project.... or take the project file
to another computer to work on it, without a collection library.

Verrrrrrry interesting!!! Thanks for the information.

Any reason not to just delete the collection????

I run with pretty much a clean slate in terms of collections.... and
maintain important collections in separate MM1 format, ones that can be
easily imported as a collection into MM2.... like my music library.

A clean slate doesn't effect the project files that already have clips in
them.

My website's Managing > Collections page tells you where the collection
database file is stored. Delete it when Movie Maker is closed if you want to
quickly re-zero your collections. MM2 works snappier and needs a bit less
memory without them. The only downside is needing to import files again when
you need one in a project.

Collections are just stepping-stones toward projects, not needed once you've
used them.

Have I told you how grateful I am that you are around?? It's wonderful to
be able to ask these "beginner" questions and have you answer them so
quickly and so clearly. Are you my hero?!?!?!
