Where can I go in MM to find a list of all the codecs used for either/or/and
all the codecs used in/by MM?

Thanks in advance!

Hello Pastor Rudy;
You can find all of the codecs installed on your system in the following
manner.
Click Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information.
Type "Codec" (without the quotes) in the find dialog box at the bottom of
the window. Be certain that neither of the 2 options at the bottom of the
find window are checked.
Maximize your window to see all of the information about the codecs that are
on the system. You can drag the colum headings to make more information
visible about each heading.
You can Google the filenames of each codec listed to get more information
about the codec. [for example I Googled msg723.acm] to get information on
that particular codec.

Hope that helps
Jeff

Thanks for this. It's great.

I was also wondering about something else very specific to WMM. What
SPECIFIC codecs does WMM use?

Hi Pastor Rudy:
The codec that WMM uses depends on what you are working with, and what you
are attempting to create. The codec used will change based on what
compression you are attempting to create. The Indeo codec is one that it
would use for certain media types.
This knowledge base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291948
will give you all of the codecs that the Movie Maker supports. Comparing
this list to the one that was generated by System Information will give you
an idea of what your system has available.

Hope that helps;
Jeff

Hello again;
I forgot to mention in the first reply, that all of the codecs on your
machine may not necessairly be recognized by Windows Movie Maker. This
article explains that more in detail, as well as provide you a link to
download the Windows Media Encoder, if you encounter a file you cannot work
with. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308464

If you were wondering why the previous KB article I provided references
Windows Media Player, I did that because that article shows most of the
codecs that may be on your system. A system may have more than those listed,
if for example you have Real Player installed, it has it's own proprietary
codecs for files created such as .ra and .rm

Hope that helps
Jeff
