Hi there

I have crystal player pro v1.96 installed on my system, and I installed Nimo
codec pack (basic option) but after doing so, crystal player would crash.
So I removed Nimo and after a re-start I installed K-Lite codec pack, but
when I clicked an .avi associated with crystal player, I got a message
saying I needed to D/L a codec from C/Players site, which I did.
But now I just get a black screen, so I uninstalled K-lite but was informed
it hadn't removed all the bits but I could remove them manualy, but even
after another re-start I still get the black screen so I was hoping someone
here may know where the thing installs itself to so I can remove any
leftovers.

BTW
I have system restore off in windows xp home SP1

Sorry but I am not familiar with Crystal Player. However, I watch a lot of
anime and they come in all sorts of different formats so I might be able to
help a bit. First off, what movie type are you trying to play? From what I
can see, Crystal Player is not free. There are lots of different media
player out there that can handle all sorts of media types. I personally use
these:
1. VLC Media Player : http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
2. Media Player Classic:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_players/media_player_classic.cfm
3. BS Player: http://www.bsplayer.org/
4. http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml
For the codec part, I read that the Community Combined Codec Pack can handle
almost any video type you can throw at it. I suggest you uninstall the other
codec packs before installing another pack because they may cause problems
with each other. Here is the site for the codec pack if you decide to give
it a try: http://www.cccp-project.net/
For more video help, you can consult your help manual for Crystal Player.
Also, you can also visit http://www.videohelp.com for more information.

Hi

I tried the Community,C,C,Pack but to no avail.
I have Nero Showtime/DivX player/Real player/WMP 10 and Crystal player and
all of them wont play the .avi files I'm trying to access. The problems
started after installing K-Lite codec pack, I found and deleted some of it's
leftovers in the Windows "prefetch" folder and re-installed Crystal player
again (clutching at straws) But still no joy.
It's as if the installing and uninstalling of the K-Lite codec pack has
removed a vital part, even when adding codecs to see if it will run the
programs wont work??????

My only suggestion is to download the players I have suggested in the other
post. Try VLC player first as that is the most popular one. They will
basically handle anything you throw in them. However, it is odd that you
cannot even play simple .AVI files. Either it has something to do with the
K-Lite Codec pack or with your .AVI files. Have you tried playing other
movie files besides those? It could be corrupted files. Again, installing a
bunch of codecs will only make matters worst as many of them make changes in
the registry.

"It is highly recommended to uninstall all existing codec related
software before installing. This way your system stays clean and
potential problems will be avoided."

Have you tried "Restoring" your computer to a point in time before you
installed the K-Lite codec pack using "System Restore"?

Hi

I can play .mpg and .vob with the other players, but not .avi files. I also
mentioned in the first post that I had system restore turned off, so that is
unfortunatley is not an option. how can I see how many codecs I have
installed on my OS?

Here is a program to list all of your codecs installed on your system. Click
on the link:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DXMan

You should create a system restore point first before removing any of the
codecs. However, I am not sure if restoring it will bring back the codecs,
but its worth a try. I read from other users to just delete all of the
codecs and download them on a need-to-use basis. This is true because you do
not want to have them conflict with each other, like your case right now.
You can download the players from before (VLC, BSplayer, etc) and use them
without having the need to download any codec pack because they can play a
lot of different types of video files. If you must install a codec pack,
install the CCCP.

Hi
I D/L the DxMan tool it's pretty good, but I'm not sure what's what yet,
there's a lot of files listed as
decoders/encoders/decompressers/parsers/handlers/filters/port
manager...etc...etc and I'm sure these can't all be codecs?

I was hoping I would recognise the codecs and remove them, then install
when needed as you mentioned, it would have been nice if I knew what was
safe to remove, but I'm afraid my knowledge isn't that advanced and I'm
afraid of making a bigger mess
than when I first started. Anyhow I'll try and study it a bit more.

Hi

"Yippeee!! I was having problems with media player decompressing .mp3 files
so I searched for tag "55" codec, which came up
as "Fraunhofer MPEG Layer-3 Audio Codec" I D/L it from ;

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/MPEG_Layer_3_Codec.htm

And not only did it sort "Win MP10" out, it fixed the .avi problem I had
with my other media players, wereas they would freeze,
I would have thought they'd run but with no sound without the audio codec
instead of freezing!! Anyway I'm not complaining :-))

**BTW I found this brilliant tool for viewing your audio and video codecs,
then showing any broken ones from;

http://www.updatexp.com/sherlock-codec-detective.html
(WinXP Home & Pro Only) "give it a go"

Once again thanks Kyuzo and Rob for your support, and hopefully anyone
reading this may get some help from the posts or the tools.

Right on dude. I am glad you took the time to research your problem on your
own. Just remember to download codecs on a need-to-use basis. A popular tool
that lets you know what audio and video codec is needed to play a movie file
is Gspot.
