Ok, this is a long story but i really need help. My family and i went on
vacation and recorded a bunch of stuff on my dad's camcorder. i wanted to
make a movie of our vacation so i finalized the discs on the camcorder and
put them into my computer. when i tried to import them into WMM, it says that
the file was not the right format or something like that so i gave the discs
to my uncle and he changed the format to MPEG using some program called
pinnacle, i think? anyway, when i tried to import those discs into WMM it
then said i needed some codec (which i dont think i have) so i tried divx but
it didnt do anything. i cant remember what i did but now i can get the video
imported into WMM but NOW there's no video, it's just sound. UGH technology
gets so annoying sometimes. please help me, i have no clue what to do!

Take a step back :-)

While your uncle's intetention were good he made it worse because WMM does not like
MGP files. It is happy with AVIs or WMV.

How is the video from the camcorder stroed. Yo mentioned discs, is one of those that
record directly to DVD? If so you need to convert that format into either AVI or WMV.

The camcorder that I have uses the mini DV tape and has a firewire (IEEE1394/i.Link)
port that I connect directly to the PC.

In fact, I came to this group at this time because I need recommendations on a
program that will convert MPG files into WMV so I can use them with WMM. I will
be doing a search to see what had been discussed. In your case, it is better to
determine what format the original video is in and the nwork from there instead
of converting it to MPG.

Saga

our camcorder uses mini DVDs. after finalizing, if i put the disc into my
computer the files come up as BUP, IFO, and VLC (.vob)

oh yes, i could try that. what is TMPGEnc and where can i find it?

thank you so much for all your help!!

tmpg is a programme, link on here, along with several other good ones, like
super.

You could also use windows media encoder, but it depends on what audio codec
was used to record the audio to disc, if it was 5.1 ac3 audio and you don't
have an ac3 encoder on your pc then wme won't be able to recode the 5.1
audio often used on dvd cams.

Whena dvd is made the authoring programme wraps up the mpeg2 files into max
size 1gb vob files, which the dvd players can read. The ifo and bup files
aren't required for editing.
