whenever i try to play a video in windows media player,
there is a message that says 'error downloading codec.' i
can hear the video, but there is no picture. how do i fix
this?

also, i used to be able to play DVDs with no problem in
media player. now, with the same DVD, it says that the
proper driver is not installed on my computer. where can i
download this (these) driver(s)?

Huh??? There is no way to know what something as arcane
as "the correct codec" is, nor where to get it. It is
supposed to be downloaded automatically and invisibly.

Nor can the user be expected to know what "the proper
driver" is or where to get it.

i gave a link to find out the correct codec. that is all the help you need.
would you like me to give you links to the hundards of video/audio codec's
to use with Windows? divx is the most common and you must download it b/c
it's not a standard. it's based on MPEG-4 but it's not MPEG-4. The
question you would be answering now is what would you like me to do when i
have already given the needed info to fix the problem?

the only other real codec problem is with MPEG-2 files or SVCD's. for this
you must buy an DVD decoder and install it

now, if you have some real advise to give me on howto help people i'll
be gald to take it. but please first read the post and follow the given
links.
