Greetings from Downunder
Firstly let me thank you for the help given on my last posting. I have now
installed a firewire card and can connect my camcorder to it, and at last
everything seems to work fine. My Kodak CX 7330 Digital Still camera takes
several seconds of movie footage and I hoped to import a number of these
into WMM2, join them together, and enhance them with effects etc.
Unfortunately when I try importing I always get the following error message
:-
«The file ........\My Pictures\Kodak Pictures\PRCC.mpg cannot be imported
because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your
computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close
and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again »

Could somebody please tell me where I have to go and what I have to do to
get the appropriate codec (what's a codec anyway?), and please be specific,
and tell me what I have to do with it to make it all work. All help always
appreciated.
Using XP Pro and WMM2

Use TMPGEnc to convert the MPG file into an AVI.... and then use the AVI in
Movie Maker.

There's a link to download the utility on the Setup > Other Software page of
my website. It comes with a 30 day free trial period.

I have never tried it with TMPGenc (didnt know it was possible?) but
VirtualDubMod is my tool of choice for such conversion. I did not see it
mentioned on your Importing>Video>MPEG2 page.

Just a follow-up note about VirtualDubMod

From the info I found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdubmod/ -
looks like it's in the Alpha stage of development, and the operating systems
are listed as Windows 95/98/2000 (not XP???).

I won't check it any further at this point, and won't add the reference to
my website.... Alpha stage software is fine for someone with your skills but
I don't want to encourage most to use it, especially not when there is other
fully developed software that can handle the conversions from MPEG-2 to AVI.
