What exactly is a codec?
Different people different codec packs and how they are better... bu
what really is right now the best all around XP codec pack to play th
various movies and video file

It really depends on what you are viewing and what codecs were used to
create the file in question.
 
I have had a little luck with codec.
When I download a foreign .avi
and can't play it due to codec problems,
I use a google search Title of film and the word 'codec'
about 50% of the time I get a specific coedc name to search for.

I have sld code pack 1. 3 seems to work on most stuff.
Some of the BBC films need extra stuff.

CODEC= CO-mpression DEC-ompression

Multimedia files are compressed to conserve file space. When played, they
are decompressed in virtual memory and the magic begins. Each codec is a
different type of compression/decompression method. An audio file uses a
different compression method than a movie file. If the movie has sound, it
needs a codec that can handle both images and sound.
