CODEC problem, no sound

i'm using the SP 2 version of IE, but even before i installed SP 2 i couldn't
get any sound from any web sites i visit in IE. i had a pro. come by one day
for another computer problem i was having and he said that maybe it was my
CODEC that was wrong. i tried searching for internet explorer CODEC, but i'm
not even sure what i'm looking for. help would be nice.

Try going to internet options..advanced tab and scroll down to multimedia.
Be sure play sounds in web pages is checked.

Mine is checked.........still won't play embedded sound files.
Any other ideas?
