I've been trying to import a video into my Windows Movie Maker 2...but it doesn't work...it comes up with this error...

The file C:\RETURN_OF_THE_KING\VIDEO_TS\rerturnoftheking.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

I've tried restarting the Movie Maker...but it doesn't work.... I have no idea what a codec is...if I have ever installed one...or how to install one...... can anyone help me?

A codec is a program which describes how to read or write data in a specific
file format. For example the codec for MP3 files is built in to Media player
while for watching DVD video you need to buy a codec or an application that
comes with the codec (WinDVD etc). With the codec once installed most other
media players will be able to read that fiel format.

The AVI file you have is encoded using some special codec which is not
avialable on your pc. So you have to obtain one. If you have downloaded the
movie from internet, most probably the required codec is a divx codec.

Download and install DivX codec from www.divx.com. The free one will do.

If it is not the required codec then you need to somehow find out whcih
codec is needed. There is program called GSpot that can find out which codec
you need. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
