My XP Pro system was working well until I had to uninstall all of my
Symantec programs to attempt to remedy a Live Update problem. Having done
so, I found that both my keyboard and my video adapter have yellow
exclamation points with a Code 39 message. System Restore and Last Good
Configuration don't work for me. Uninstall/reinstall is not a remedy.
Installing a new USB keyboard just gave me two Code 39 keyboards in Control
Panel even though the PS-2 keyboard is not attached. New cleanly installed
drivers don't help. If I even touch the keyboard the system locks up
completely.

What adjustments to XP can I make to solve these problems? (typed with On
Screen Keyboard)

Problem resolved! A repair installation of WinXP did no good. Finally I
decided before formatting and starting over that I would reinstall the
deleted Symantec programs, one at a time, to see if the issues would resolve
themselves. Sure enough on the first shot a reinstall of pcAnywhere 11
Corporate Edition cleaned up everything. Once I discovered this result I
checked the driver files for my keyboard and video adapter in Control Panel.
Lo and behold, pcAnywhere has somehow made its file aw_host5.sys one of the
files that drives both the keyboard and the vid card. One more rotten trick
from Symantec...
