I have been running Windows XP on my Dell Dimension
2400. I am building a new system so I wanted to use XP
on that system and load my old Windows 2000 software on
the Dell. I did that and updated to SP-4 as well as
updating the drivers as appropriate. However, I do get a
message that WIN2k has found new hardware, but can't
identify it and gives me a "Code 28" message. In device
manager, I get a ? Unknown Device icon. The only clue I
have is that the device is "PCI Bus 0, device 31,
Function 3". I find that interesting since I don't have
any PCI cards installed. Also, I don't have the problem
when I boot into Windows XP. Any suggestions?

It's probably a device integrated into the motherboard. Although you don't
have any PCI cards installed, it's quite probable that your integrated
motherboard audio, modem, or NIC is on the PCI bus and requires a driver
loaded to operate correctly. Check out http://support.dell.com/home.aspx
and look for drivers for your device.
