Update your sound drivers? Especially if you have Realtek, as there
last couple of updates have been buggy (current seems OK). Also there
is a new update for COD4 (released late last week) that should be applied

Run Secunia advisor frequently

http://secunia.com/software_inspector/

It is online, free and quick and VERY up to date. It will pick up
instantly if you have out of date sound or video drivers

That sounds like a cool program, how much adware/spyware/spam do you get
using it? I mean you may get nothing, but rarely have I found a "free"
program of this nature, that is really free.

Totally Add free. It installs nothing on your machine. You get an
option to have a news flash E-mail when it updates. It updates about 20
seconds after a latest driver/update is issued. It is nice to get all
green ticks. Also picks up Adobe and Java old stuff left behind, even
though you ahve the latest drivers, these old files are still
vulnerable, so worth correcting

There is an installable free product (called Secunia PSI) that searches
all your HD and programs. It picks up any "patched" warez <smile>. It
does a very thorough job. It wants to run in the tray, but you can stop
that and just run as a batch when you feel like checking

I see Realtek issued another sound driver yesterday R1.95

These guys have had such buggy stuff they are issuing updates 2 or more
times a month.
