I currently manage over 600 systems, all using XP Pro. I'm getting
reports of lockups and crashes every time Cnn's website is accessed
with IE6.

These systems are in various locations, so a common virus, etc. is not
likely. The only commonality is that these are basic workstations, all
using Intel chipsets with on-board Intel video.

I can get this to happen on a newly built workstation the first time
it goes to the CNN homepage.

I can't seem to find any info on this, and yet these systems only
experience this behavior at CNN's site. Weird.

This has been going on now for few weeks.

Thanks for any suggestions or ideas.

Regards,
Mitch

Hi Mitch,

I have been unable to reproduce your problem on myXP pro machine. I noticed
however that a popup is loaded when navigating to the cnn home page site
(http://www.cnn.com). I am using MSN Search toolbar with popup blocking.

Also if you view the source of the home page you will see that there is a
hotchpotch of javascript (of various versions) being run on the load page
event.

onload="CNN_initVideoModules();cnnHandleCSIs()"

My first guess would be that the CNN_initVideoModules() function may be the
cause of your woes.

I can only suggest that you contact the webmaster of the site and report
your difficulties to them.

Oh also my Internet Security Zone is set to Meduim (a higher value may be
hindering some of the object resolution thats occuring in the javascripting)

Regards.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your reply. I just got another random call today from
someone who has a 3 month old Dell system experiencing the same thing.
This person is not under contract with my company and we've never
touched her system, she found us in the Yellow Pages. Obviously there
is a common denominator here but I'll be darned if I can figure it
out.

This is happening on systems without any anti-virus/spyware software
whatsoever, and the security settings are all set to default, Windows
Firewall turned off, etc.

It's ONLY happening at cnn.com's homepage, nowhere else. I'm stumped.
I've written to the CNN webmaster three times over the last few weeks
and haven't even received an auto-reply.

Thanks again for taking the time to look into this, I appreciate it.
Looks like I will officially make the move to Firefox for my
customers.

Rob,

Tried IE7 Beta2...same problem, and yes, it only happens at cnn.com.

This has made me think about of one of my favorite bands from the late
80's... "Straightjacket Fits"... :)

Hi Mitch

The following DNS report

http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=cnn.com

indicates that (e-mail address removed) is a valid email address. You may want to
click the above link to run your own dns report to check it out.

Other things that come to mind are your HOSTs file (forget that)

I just loaded the site on a Win2K with IE SP1 machine without problems but
there was no popups.

When I load the site with IE XP SP2 I get a popup warning. Allowing popups
reloads the page but no popup appears! Something strange there.

I have cc'ed this thread to cnn. Hopefully it will reach them.

Regards.

I'm having the same problem and only with CNN. It was set as my home page
but about a week ago it started locking up and I have to <alt><ctrl><del>
out. I have tried reloading the java and flash players as well as a new
video card. Nothing seems to work.

If anyone can figure this on out pleas post it here, I suspect it's more
common than original thought.

Thanks,

Laser

Laser,

Thanks for letting me know that I'm not crazy. I simply do not use
cnn.com anymore and haven't had a single problem browsing.

Same here, I do go back every few days just to see and unfortunately I
still have the same problem. By the way, a co-worker here is having the
same problem.

I'm usually a master at finding anything about anything on the
internet, but short of this newsgroup, and some really old outdated
similar issues with CNN and IE, I'm coming up empty. Certainly this
must be more widespread, I can't believe this behavior is not being
reported all over the place.

Different video card, every imaginable setting preference has been
played with, etc., and still the same problem...

UNCLE!

Hi Mitch,

Yesterday I loaded FireFoxand and so far everything is working great. It
looks like we will be switching over to FireFox.

Hi Laser,

Yeah, I've made that move as well. However, I hate getting stumped
over stuff like this and will continue to investigate until I have no
hair left on my head!
