CNAME records can't be found

I am having a problem that my CNAME records can not be found when entered as
"secondname CNAME firstname". When I put in "secondname CNAME
firstname.domain.com." then it resolves if you qualify
"firstname.domain.com". This does not seem right since I think I should be
able to have an unqualified CNAME. Any ideas?

How are you trying to create your CNAME?

What I mean by that is, what are you putting in the name field and in the
Fully Qualified Name field?

CNAMES work this way, if you want to resolve newname.mydomain.com to
othername.yourdomain.com do it this way:

In your mydomain.com forward lookup zone create a new alias, put "newname"
in the name field and in the Fully Qualified name field put in
"othername.yourdomain.com". Then "newname.mydomain.com" will resolve to
"othername.yourdomain.com"
