John

whenever i login after a restart and actually get into
the windows desktop i get an error box that says
something like "can not find 'cmd.exe' make sure the
target is correct." I have never seen this msg before
and it seems that microsoft knowledge base has nothing
about it. i would appreciate someone helping to fix the
error.

Hi, John.

I don't know why you are seeing that message, but cmd.exe is the Command
prompt, also known as the "DOS" window. (I put "DOS" in quotes because it
is not really MS-DOS, but an emulator that run in WinXP.)

My guess is that some MS-DOS program is trying to start in the background.
Perhaps a shortcut in your Startup folder is calling that program, and the
shortcut is not configured properly to find cmd.exe (which should be in
\Windows\system32).

Run msconfig.exe (at the Run prompt) to see what is starting - or trying to
start - when you login.
