Closing RD client before fully logging off causes XP Pro to hang

I found that if I'm logging off my XP pro machine via Remote Desktop, and I
simply close the RD client (disconnecting) while the log off happens, the log
off procedure simply hangs, even after I RD back in, or log in locally (which
presents a blank screen with no toolbar or anything else). A hard reset
seems to be the only option.

The reason this affects me is that the log off procedure for my remote
machine takes about two minutes, and I like to physically shut down my local
machine at the end of the day. Rather than wait for the log off to complete,
I want to initiate the log off, close my connection, then shutdown my local
machine.

Perhaps you should look at why your log off takes that long.

Is it due to some normal log off script (backup?) or other intentional
processing during log off, or is there some error?

Perhaps some application is hanging - possible solution would be to close
that application before logging off.
Another one is if you have network drives mapped (especially through
something like a VPN connection), if the connection is dropped before
disconnecting the mapped drives, it can cause long delays. This can
sometimes be helped by executing "net use /y * /d" before logoff.

Does the log off take that long when you log off locally on that machine,
or is it only when you are connected in via RD?


You could perhaps set up a batch file on the remote machine that would
"sleep" for a bit, then execute a logoff. You could run this, then just
do a disconnect and shut down your local machine. The logoff would then
occur after you have disconnected. One of the utilities below may help
with this: (they can also log off instead of doing a full shutdown)

I might go for the delayed shutdown solution. It's not a matter of the
remote computer freezing while logging off...there are just a lot of
services, antivirus programs, unknown scripts set up by my domain admin, etc.
that are shut down when I log off...those just take time. It's not over a
VPN...the machines are actually next to each other, but I only have one
monitor/kb/mouse, and I'd rather just remote desktop into the other one
(faster/more convenient than using a switchbox)

I don't know about that anymore - those little one button USB switchboxes
for cheap are pretty nice.
