CLOSING INTERNET EXPLORER 6

I find that after closing Internet Explorer I am still
connected to the internet and the only way I can disconect
my phone line is to shut down my system.
The same problem applies if I just have my e-mail program
loaded.
Any suggestions on how to cure this problem?

There's a good possibility that this is being caused by a third-party
program (adware, spyware, parasite).
