Seems Woolies could be shutting the doors before Christmas time as they are slipping further into the red each day.
They are selling with discounts of up to 50% in-store.
Sadly this High Street stalwart may be bust before Christmas day with the loss of over 25k of jobs! :(

I remember when F.W.Woolwoths were the front runners at christmas time, mind you they sold almost anything and everything at that time.

Still its sad to see this happen!

Yep, end of an era.

We used to go every January and buy toys in the sales for the following Xmas. They were usually 50% off and great value.

Its a bit upsetting really. Woolies was part of my childhood. I always used to go and look around when I was a kid with my grandparents and look at the toys.

I'm a bit gutted :(

It's been on the cards for a while.

I can actually remember sawdust covered wooden floors and in the middle of the store rows ands rows of 7" vinyl singles. They were usually playing them all as well, I figure the younger sales assistants used to love that job playing and selling records.

They also had their own label, Embassy, which would make imitations of the current top 40 using unknown artists and session musicians. A single then was 6/8 but an Embassy single was only 4/6. Unfortunately, the Embassy singles were usually crap.

Showing me age now.

Another slice of UK life down the plughole but things change, things evolve. Woolworths didn't move with the times, their prices weren't very good so I'm not surprised they floundered.

I predict W H Smith next, their prices are well over the top.

Wow ! I'd forgotten about that till I saw your post, Flops. I think the Embassy singles were ALWAYS crap.

Yeah a damn shame..

Holds some fond memories for me that store..

I can remember going in there and buying my first ever record a 7" single Lemmy and Motorheads The ace of spades..Circa 79-80

And I'll always remember the pick N mix at the front of most stores because The sweet bins were far to tempting for me, and I could never resist just nicking the one sherbert lemon and sucking it as I walked around the shop looking at the toys..
(I can hear the police sirens coming for me now after that admission)

end of another era..:(

I bought my first casette from Woolies, it was a Mr Big song, from about 1990 -91, i remeber as it was playing the coach on my school trip to the trenches in Normandy. Can't remember the name of it, but i'll sing a little.

huhhh hhhhmmm.

" i'm the one who wants to be with you, deep inside i hope you feel it toooo, feeeeeelllll it toooo yeahhhhh "

However i digress......

I like/liked Woolies, even if it was a bit more exspensive.

Bought my first vinyl there too !
Instant Replay/ Dan Hartman..such a shame really...fond memories

During my early climb up the ladder of my illustrious career even i have worked for Woolies & MFI.
I wonder if thats whats gone wrong, not enough people like me working for the shops?

How many other people have worked for Woolies?

Wow, that was a trip down memory lane... I can remember when there were people (mainly women) serving behind the counters too. Does anyone remember the "loose" chocolate flakes? They weren't wrapped, but just sat on the counters on a thin paper cases. They had such a good taste. Woolies was also where I bought a black plastic, guitar-shaped brooch, with a circular b&w pic of the "Fab Four" on the front.

In our local shop, they used to have really small transistor radios playing all day, they were attached to small, barrel-shaped single speakers. I really, really wanted one of those radios lol, and used to lurk hopefully, ever hopeful that my mum would buy me one.

At one time, "Which" voted Woolies paint as being the best.

Their own brand vinyl records might not have been up to much, but does anyone remember their "Aspects" label CDs? I bought a few and they weren't bad at all. In fact, every year we bring out the "Christmas Spectacular" CD which I probably bought in the early 90s. It's still a favourite and sounds great.

Big sigh, gazing off into the middle distance :D

Just come back from visiting my local Woolies.
Loads of people in the shop & seem to be doing good business, but sadly they may be out of stock by Saturday.
Seems however their retail sites are big business with Lidl, Aldi & others after them.

And did you know a lot of Woolies sites are old cinemas that closed in the late 60's!

Yes it is sad that Woolies is to be no more.My wife and I always would call into Woolies if we had a few moments to kill while up the high street shopping. Eight times out of ten she would buy some little thing. And I think that is were the trouble was.The prices were far to low.Thought they might have sold loads of low cost items, they were not really money earners. But I feel so sorry for the shop staff who face redundency at this time, what a rotten thing to happen.
If Gordon Brown could safe is chums in the banking world why not Woolies?

They reported the biggest ever in their history takings today. Shame to see it go but it is only a shopping chain after all. there is always new blood around to fill in the gaps. new day new store chain.

Progress it is a wonderful thing.
