When I close down XP Pro on my laptop it takes a good 2
or 3 minutes to actually switch off. I think there maybe
a system conflict going on at close down, but I don't
know how to find out what the problem is and resolve it.

Can anyone help?

Zapcat,

Slow shutdowns are caused by a number of factors. One of the common issue is Clear Page File at shutdown enabled.

Enable a Proper Shutdown - Download the fix from Kelly's site:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/shutdown.reg

SHUTDOWN WORKS, BUT IT'S REAL SLOW

An application or a filter driver failing to terminate or a corrupt event log may be a cause.

I had the same problem with my laptop(fujitsu-siemens) I had to do a clean
disk and then a defrag; it cut the time by almost 80%. Inside 20seconds I am
shut down now. It may be something as simple as that.If it is something
else, I can't help you. But a good cleaning and defrag never hurt anyone.
:-)

Good luck
