closing background apps or programs?

on windows task manager I have a lot of processes running and not sure what
they all are, and would like to end any not needed. When I click end
process I get a warning and am affraid to continue. Can you give me any
advise?

After you get a list of all the apps and programs running,

Try this website: http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

It gives you an explanation of every single one that is going and the list is alphabetical. I found very interesting results with this website.

Also another great website is www.pcpitstop.com and it will deliver great results as well.

Processes/services running are not the same thing as programs running.
Programs running are listed under the Application tab. If you're interested
in what the running processes are and if you want to remove them try
www.blackviper.com.
