I have a problem playing one of my games. After a little
while of playing my game it will just shut down. I
suspected that the problem was my background programs but
I am not sure which ones I can close and which ones I can
leave open. With my old version of windows I just closed
everything but systray and explorer but now I'm lost.
Please help.

Right, I'll just have a quick look down my processes and try and list the
needed/system ones (haha this should be good for a laugh), obviously some
might differ etc.

ctfmon.exe
explorer.exe
spoolsv.exe
svchost.exe (usually a few of these)
lsass.exe
services.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe
smss.exe

If you do mess up I think the worst that would happen is you'd have to
restart your machine (so do make sure you don't have any unsaved data in the
memory).

Another way to check and/or disable what's starting up with Windows is with
the system config utility, you can start this by going to 'Run' in the
'Start menu' and typing in msconfig going to the start up tab, usually
anything that isn't in the Windows directory is not needed by Windows
itself, obviously you can easily undo anything, if you do make a mistake.

One I like is freeware of ENDITALL.
I use this before doing any DEFRAG.
It will close all background Programs in about 3 seconds.
There is a couple different places to get the download. If
it looks like a pain from one site ,,, just go to next one.

Hi,

I looked at the Enditall freeware, and it looks promising. Have
you used it on your XP Pro or Home system? I ask since it says:
"EndItAll 2 can be used under Windows 95, Windows 98, Win-
dows ME, Windows NT4 and Windows 2000" but doesn't
mention XP. Not withstanding that however, 2000 software will
usually run perfectly on Windows XP. Your input is appreciated. :-)

Yep, it runs OK under XP Pro.

But it doesn't seem as effective as under Win Me days.

Try the KILL-ALL button.

It does have a "learn" function, so if it doesn't kill something, you can tell it to do it
next time

Good to know. I wonder if it properly with firewalls
such as Zone Alarm which use a service (true vector)?

Cheers,
Jimmy.

Yep, have it running with ZA. That is one that it doesn't Kill at the first time around,
but U can "train it" to do it in the future.
