When a slideshow ends and the black screen appears telling
me to click to exit, nothing happens, or I get an error
message telling me that Powerpoint has created errors and
must be shut down.

Any insight as to how this situation can be resolved would
be appreciated!

It is important to know the version of PowerPoint you are using. Also, in a
problem such as you are describing, it would also be good to include your
Windows Version and memory size.

Without this information, I would suggest doing a detect and repair on the
office programs, such as PowerPoint, first.

Also make sure that all the appropriate Service Packs are installed, all the
drivers are current, Direct X is current and upgraded. I would also only
run PowerPoint (program) from the hard drive and any presentations from the
hard drive.

Also, did this behavior begin after you installed a new software program,
update, or version? Or has PowerPoint never worked on your system?

In your reply post, please also include the exact wording of the error.

The version of PowerPoint being used is from Microsoft
Office Student and Teacher edition 2003. All the updates
are up to date.

When Detect and Repair was run it found no problems.

This computer has an 80Gig HD, 512MB RAM and runs Windows
XP Home edition.

The error message is a standard Microsoft message saying:
Microsoft Office PowerPoint has encountered a problem and
needs to close. There was no further description of the
problem.

This problem has plagued my computer since I first
installed Microsoft Office.

The drivers are fairly recent, however, some of the
updates for the NVIDIA Geforce4 have not been cleared by
Microsoft and have therefore not been downloaded.

Many thanks for your assistance,

George White

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

When the crash occurs, does a crash reporting dialog will appear with a
message that begins something like: "Microsoft Office <application> has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience."

When this occurs:

1) Click on "What data does this report contain?
2) Note down the following information:

* AppName:
* AppVer:
* AppStamp:
* ModName:
* ModVer:
* ModStamp:
* fDebug:
* Offset:

3) There might also be a "bucket" number. If so, note down that number as
well.
3) Click "Close"
4) Click "Send Error Report

If you post the information noted in steps 2 and 3 above to this newsgroup
I might be able to verify whether or not this is already a known issue and,
if it's known, possibly a way to avoid or fix the problem in the future.
