I've been told by cox, my internet provider, I have to close these ports to protect myself from a coming virus. How do I do this?

Hello Jmarine,

I don't have an answer for you but, I have a question. I also use COX. I
have received no notice or any other communication from COX along that line.
Where and how did you come by that information? That seems very suspicious
to me.

The shut off my service last week to "make" me call in to inform me my computer was at risk, and I may have a virus, (I did) and I should run critical updates and virus scan. I did all these. My service was turned off again- I called the security department and they informed me I had open ports and should fix them- This week there would be a virus coming I would be likely to get. I don't know how to close these

I have had no such experience with COX in the 4 years I have been using
their service. As far as I know, they don't monitor your computer in regard
to viruses or any of your settings. My suggestion is, call COX's tech
support in your area **At the number you got when you signed up with COX**
and ask them what the deal is. If you don't have the support number, just
use the phone book and call the local office. Don't use a number you was
given over the internet!! Something don't sound right to me.

Please post back to this thread and let me know what you come up with from
the call.

LOL, JAX

JAX,
You're using a firewall, aren't you?
In which case, you're OK.

firewall (www.zonelabs.com).

SNIP

Just out of interest the ports are NetBIOS or SMB over TCP - i.e., ports you
would like to be closed.
Chris

Yes Chris, I use ZA. My point is, COX could care less, that is my problem. I
am very suspicious of the statement, " The shut off my service last week to
"make" me call in to inform me my computer was at risk," issue. In my case,
COX sends me an e-mail to inform me of any COX issues. I have dealt with COX
long enough to have some idea how they deal with customer support. I have to
wonder who he called and where he got the number.

JAX

If this is indeed from your ISP,then they are very
intrusive, they have no right to stop your service like
that.If their is a security issue they should send an
e/mail.Sounds way too much like big brother to suit me.

Exactly MAP. I have a hunch his PC has been hacked and someone is up to no
good. I have dealt with COX for 4 years, that is not their way of doing
business period. Let me re-emphasize that statement, .............

I agree. It's a bit intrusive if what the OP says is true, and you know the
ISP in question.
I have known ISPs here in the UK to firewall user's smtp to stop a virus
spreading, but AFAIK they warn of that in the T&C of the service.

Greetings --

With a firewall.

Whichever firewall you decide upon, be sure to ensure UDP ports 135,
137, and 138 and TCP ports 135, 139, and 445 are _all_ blocked. You
may also disable Inbound NetBIOS (NetBIOS over TCP/IP). You'll have to
follow the instructions from firewall's manufacturer for the specific
steps.

You can test your firewall at:
