whenever i try to add and effect transition or in general edit movie maker shuts down. there is not even an error message. help please?

Go to my website and download the program "Rename Codecs" While you are
there, read the short Tutorial on how to use the program. Your problem
sounds like the classic codec issue. The Rename Codec program may well be
your solution
